At the start of winter, we loved sharing activities for seniors and highlighting organizations, like FiftyForward in Nashville, on social media. We hope these posts serve as reminders that support, connection, and nourishment matter year-round, especially for older adults and families.
In the new year, we would like to inspire you to take advantage of the quieter winter months to reset. Though a reset can happen at any time during the year, January invites you to slow down and reassess. This time isn’t about pressure or perfection, it’s about pause and reflection.
Tips for Reflection, Resolution, & Fruition
Making time to reflect can be challenging, but it’s important. We’ve compiled a short list of helpful tips for figuring out what matters to you most:
1. Take credit for the light, the good, and the great.
Consider all the ways in which the past year went well. The memories that make you smile, and the activities that you’d like to do more of in the new year. Take a moment to recognize and enjoy the things that make you happy in life.
2. Be honest about what you’d like to see change.
Think about key pain points from the past year (or maybe several years!) and try to dig into the root of what made these points painful. Once you know what’s creating friction, you will be better equipped to address it moving forward.

3. Seek out another perspective, even if you think you have it all figured out.
Particularly where you’re struggling to land on a problem and/or solution, ask a trusted source for guidance. There is often more than one way to approach situations and the people around you may be able to offer ideas that you hadn’t considered.
4. Start.
Whether you know exactly what you’d like to do more/less of in the upcoming year, or you’ve simply identified that you need to spend more time reflecting, get started. Challenge yourself to have a loose plan by the end of January and begin whatever your next steps are the following month. You’d be surprised how much you have learned, and even accomplished, by the end of winter in late March!
5. Ask for help- we all need it!
Talk to friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and broader community members about your “resolutions” and lean on them for accountability and support.
